Jane’s Walk – May 3-4

The 7th annual Jane’s Walk celebrates the legacy of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs. Free walking tours are held on the first weekend in May to get people out to explore neighbourhoods in their city. Tours are led by local residents who want to share their interests and may deal with past, present and/or the future of the area. As of 2011, 75 cities in 15 countries were participating.

Here are a  few examples:

Riverview: Beer, Bears, Boxing and a Roller Coaster Ride through Time

From its early days as a transportation hub to becoming Winnipeg’s premier entertainment destination, Riverview has a unique story. Join, lifelong Rouger and urbanist, Jino Distasio on a walk that highlights his 40 plus years of living the South Osborne dream!

The Edge Condition: Main Street between the Disraeli and Neechi Commons

Guided by architect Wins Bridgman: “The edge condition, centered on the underpass between the North and the South end of Winnipeg will be traced between the Disraeli Freeway and the newly opened Neechi Commons. We will meet some of the people who have personally invested in Main Street, look at the different uses of the street over time and critically observe the nature of transition in this area.”

Wander through Wildwood: Discover Radburn in Winnipeg

Guided by Sue and Bob Piper: “Wildwood Park is unique, planned by Hubert Bird in the mid-40s to replicate the Radburn concept in New Jersey. See how the original 5 house designs have changed in the past 65 years. Explore the natural wonders of this green space in the city.”
