Last April, AAOM was happy to host Kim Lauffer (IAAO President-Elect) at our 2013 Symposium. Later, Kim recounted her trip to Winnipeg in the summer issue of IAAO’s Fair and Equitable magazine…
Association of Assessing Officers of Manitoba Hosts Great Minds Symposium
Kim Lauffer RES
According to IAAO Procedural Rule 5.2.1 Representation of IAAO, “The President-Elect shall, as directed by the President, represent the IAAO at chapter, affiliate, and other meetings of local organizations for involvement with the members.”
As part of that mandate, I was pleased to travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to attend the Great Minds Symposium of the Association of Assessing Officers of Manitoba (AAOM) April 11—12 at the South Beach Resort in Scanterbury, Manitoba.
South Beach in Manitoba is very different from South Beach in Florida! There are no movie stars or millionaires hanging out at this South Beach—there is, however, a fun group of energetic and hearty assessing professionals. The education program was informative and included a presentation by Michael Cortvriendt (Manitoba’s version of Jimmy Kimmel) and AAOM President Dan Diachun about the demonstration appraisal report required for a provincial designation.
I also learned about the Canadian Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (CUSPAP). Oh yes, there are other versions of USPAP out there and that discovery had me on the edge of my chair.
Gordon Daman, President of Red River Group Canada, an appraisal, valuation, and consulting firm, presented a session on “Rural Land and Agricultural Valuation in Canada,” providing an insider’s view of appraising agricultural properties. My favorite part was the mechanical dairy with extra-special kibbles to entice the happy cows in for milking. Very Jetsons!
Malcolm Stadig followed up with a detailed presentation on “Estimating Depreciation.”
Later that evening, I joined the group for a lovely dinner. I thank my primary contact, Carol Lyon, who was a big contributor to the success of the event, for her travel and weather information and tips. I also thank LAO and President Turner for the opportunity to meet so many wonderful members of AAOM.
