Highlights of the 2014 SAAA Workshop in Regina, Saskatchewan

It was before the crack of dawn on Monday October 6th, that AAOM President Erin Reid, and I (Jan Trochim, AAM)  headed down the highway to the big city of Regina for the Saskatchewan Assessment Appraisers Association 75th Year Conference and Workshop.

Arriving just in time for lunch, we were greeted by the kind executive.

The first afternoon speaker, an RCMP officer educated the members on signs to look out for and when to exit any premise where grow ops are occurring.

The final speaker of the day discussed the Revitalization of Regina.  In 2012 The City of Regina purchased the CP Intermodal Yard 17 acre parcel of land in downtown Regina. The CP Intermodal has recently relocated to the new Global Transportation Hub within the outer circle of Regina.  The new Mosaic Stadium home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders which will replace Taylor Field was also topic of discussion along with the redevelopment plans of the vacated lands.

Tuesday morning we took part in a tour of the Global Transportation Hub which now houses the newly relocated CPR intermodal and the new 1,000,000 sf Loblaw’s distribution center.  This building has 206 overhead doors, employees 800 people and operates 363 days a year.

There have been talks of relocating the CPR lines in the City of Winnipeg.  Did you know that there are 400 rail cars that pass thru the City of Winnipeg each day…..

In the afternoon Nathalie Roy-Patenaude, Director-Counselor of Professional Practices delivered an appraisal refresher and workshop.

The SAAA AGM was held Wednesday morning and then it was back to Winnipeg.

The three days flew by and it was great to have had the opportunity to visit our sister association and be a part of their 75th Annual Conference.
