2016 SAAA Workshop – Regina, Saskatchewan (September 27-29)

It was before the crack of dawn on Tuesday, September 27th that Shirley Bomak and I headed down the highway to the big City of Regina for the Saskatchewan Assessment Appraisers Association 14th Annual Workshop and AGM.  Arriving just in time for lunch, we were greeted by the kind SAAA executive.

The first afternoon session speakers were two detectives with the Regina Police Service.  They educated the delegates on gang members and what to look out for on the streets and when inspecting.

The afternoon presenters were Home Inspectors, who educated us as to what they look for when doing inspections and related it to what assessors look for which might affect a building’s value.  Repairs to building foundations were also discussed.

Wednesday morning’s workshop was about the Revaluation of Regina. The City Assessors from each City shared their methods of the 2017 Revaluation with a reference date of January 1, 2015.  The last revalue was January 1, 2011. The City of Regina is looking at an overall increase of 53%, Saskatoon 11.5% and farmland an overall increase of 15%.

Wednesday afternoon brought discussions from the First Nations Tax Commission regarding policies and regulations for the First Nation property taxation.

Late Wednesday afternoon there was a tour of the Mosaic Football Stadium which took all the attendees through the entire stadium.

Wednesday evening there was an awards banquet with a stand-up comedian from Toronto for our entertainment.

The days flew by and it was great to have had the opportunity to visit our sister association and to be a part of their 14th Annual Workshop.
